My New Found Swedish Candy Obsession

December 28, 2016 2 min read

Every year, I join the Reddit Gift Exchange and become someone’s Secret Santa. This year, I decided to opt in to send a gift internationally and in return receive a gift from someone in another country. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but then again that is what Secret Santa is all about, right? Well, I knew my Secret Santa had shipped my present, but I had no idea when it would arrive.

About a week ago, I heard a knock on the door and found a package at my door. When I looked at the package, it had words I couldn’t recognize. I tried to make out what language it was and figured it was Swedish. When I opened the package, there was a note inside. The note told me of all the goodies in the bag and what each one of the items were. My Secret Santa considered the fact that I love to learn about cultures and I love traveling, so he/she made a Swedish goodie bag full of Swedish candy!

My goodie bag was filled with different types of candies, a cheese slicer (that we do not have in the U.S.) and a delicacy from Sweden – very fancy cheese! (I LOVE cheese).

Swedish Candy

So far my favorite candies have been Kex, Pilar and Juleskum. Most of the candies are licorice, which I’m not a huge fan of, but I am definitely loving the Marabou black saltlakrits, which is chocolate with salted licorice. Trust me, I do not have the taste buds for licorice, especially salted licorice, but the taste of chocolate with salted licorice is simply amazing!

The Juleskum candy I got is a strawberry marshmallow that is purely delicious! It doesn’t taste like the marshmallows in the U.S. but rather like a mix of bubble gum and marshmallows.

Kex is a chocolate bar wafer. You can definitely tell it is from Sweden by the taste of the chocolate. Chocolate tastes so much better in Sweden then in the U.S. Anyways, I haven’t gotten to the other candies, but I’m looking forward to trying all of my Swedish candy!
