If you’re in the same boat as me, then you work a 9 to 5 full-time job. This equals to 40 hours a week, every single week. The only breaks you get are the weekends, holidays and any accrued days off you get (unless you work for a company that is amazing and gives you a lot of time off!)
The way it works in my company is that every year we get two paid floating holidays followed by nine paid holidays throughout the year. Since I have not passed my first year at work, I will accrue 10 days of vacation throughout my first year. That’s 21 vacation days that I get along with my weekends. So as someone who’s always looking for more days off and more days to travel, I came up with this travel hack.
- Yellow = Weekends
- Green = Holidays
- Blue = Floating Holidays
- Purple = 10 days off
It might not look like much, but what this is telling me is that I get 6 out of state vacations and everything in yellow are good opportunities for in state vacations! (I live close to Disney World and have a beach nearby…). It is possible to have more vacations! Most people think that you need to quit your job to travel more and truth is that you just have to be smart!
There are other people who work full-time and they have gotten to see so much of the world already. One girl has been able to travel around the world during long weekends (she utilizes holidays and weekends to make this happen). Another woman I heard about accumulates her vacations, so one year she will accumulate all her vacation time and then the next year she uses them all along with the holidays and her accrued days off. This gives her more days off in a year to travel.
As someone who has never planned out vacation times and such, I really think this is a good hack to prepare for any future travels. Although, my calendar may change (I need to fit the one year anniversary/honeymoon somewhere), it still informs me of everything I can do and how many vacations out of the country I can take! I’m excited for 2017 and can’t wait for all of my vacations!
Will you be travel hacking 2017?
