What to Do During a Layover

April 3, 2017 Hanny 3 min read No Comments

Ah layovers…this can be a real nightmare to some travelers. Especially, when you are in a rush to make it to a destination by a certain time. Although it is simple to avoid layovers by booking flights back to back, sometimes things can happen and you end up waiting for your flight.

This has happened to me a few times, where I’ve had a flight cancelled and I’ve had to wait a few hours for my next flight. During the times that I’ve had to wait, I would simply use my Priority Pass, which gave me access to a variety of lounges. I always thought layovers were great because I got drinks and food in between flights.

However, most travelers do not have a Priority Pass and have to sit in the airport bored out of their minds. If the layover is a long one (6 hours and more) then most airlines will offer a free hotel for the inconvenience, but companies have started to get smarter and are now offering some amazing layover programs.

A few of these programs are as follows:

  • Singapore Airlines stopover program
  • Icelandair layover program
  • Ethiad Airways stopover

Though many of the airlines offer long layovers for those wanting to venture out, these are the ones that give travelers some amazing experiences.

1.Singapore Stopover Program

Singapore airlines offers travelers the opportunity to experience Singapore during their stopover. The airlines offers two packages to choose from. One of the packages includes a one-night hotel stay, return airport transfer, complimentary rides on the SIA Hop-on bus, admission to some amazing tourist attractions and discounts at participating F&B outlets in the hotels. Although you have to pay to join the Stopover program, it is well worth it, rather than paying extra money to get a direct flight or back-to-back flight to your destination.

2.Icelandair Layover Program

Icelandair introduced the stopover buddy service, which gives passengers with a layover to see Iceland through experienced eyes. It is completely free of charge to request a Stopover Buddy. This is an incredible way to experience Iceland and best part is you get a completely free tour by a Stopover Buddy.

3.Ethiad Airways Stopover

Ethiad Airways program offers some great layover packages. There is the Abu Dhabi 2-for-1 stopover and the Premium Stopover. The 2-for-1 deal is if you have a long layover, where Ethiad will pay for your second night in Abu Dhabi for free. So you would only pay for 1 night in the hotel. Under this package, you can choose from a variety of activities and also get the 2-for-1 deal. The Premium Stopover are mostly for those in Business or First Class. Guests in Business class receive a free night’s stay, while those in First Class receive two free nights stay. Guests flying in The Residence to Abu Dhabi with a layover will be treated to two nights at the Emirates Palace.

With so many options, it’s hard to hate layovers. Especially with these amazing programs airlines have for travelers. So, the next time you have a layover, remember there is so many things you can do then staying in the airport.
