One of my most memorable trips in the U.S. took me to Cambridge, Massachusetts. The purpose of my trip was to tour the various colleges and hopefully start a new life in this wonderful city full of history. This trip was so memorable because this was where I had to make my big decision on colleges.
Many people who go to Cambridge aren’t there for colleges, though. Many go for the Boston Red Sox, the rich history, or the many cultural opportunities. If you’re planning your first trip to Massachusetts, here are a few tips to have a successful trip.
When to Go
When I decided to visit Cambridge, I went in April. This was the perfect time to go, as the city wasn’t so flooded with students. Since Cambridge has some of the greatest colleges, including Harvard and MIT, there are more than 250,000 students in the area during move-in, move-out, and graduation weekends. I went at a time where the college students were still in class, so the hotels and restaurants weren’t filled up.
Before planning your trip to Massachusetts, consider the dates you want to go and what you would like to do. Travel Like a Local
I find that it’s always best to travel like a local, not like a tourist. Many companies seek out tourists because they spend the most money. Since they have no idea what to do or what to look for, they tend to take tour buses and go to overpopulated places. I’m not saying that tour buses are horrible, but if you want to see more of the city on a budget, then travel like a local.

Take the Subway, Not a Taxi
I live in a city without subways, but the good thing is that many cities in Massachusetts do. Instead of spending $20 or $30 on a taxi or even $15 on an Uber, consider using the subway. You can also take the bus, which is about the same price as the subway, but subways often get you to your destination more quickly.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) operates subways and buses as well as several rail commuter lines throughout the Boston area. What I like about the subway is that the fare is $2.25 each way, which is better than what you would spend on a taxi. The MBTA also has different passes to meet all sorts of needs. If you’re staying in Cambridge for a month, then look into the Charlie Card for a discount on your rides.
Cambridge is a wonderful place to visit that’s full of history and charm. This city can offer an amazing experience once you know how to get around the area. If you visit at the right time, travel like a local, and take the subway, then you’re bound to have a successful first trip to Cambridge, Massachusetts.
