May 4, 2014 Hanny 3 min read 1 Comment

Traveling is a great way to learn about the world, but with the advancement of technology, we no longer rely much on maps as we do with our phones and gadgets. Being a smartphone and tablet addict, I am always on the lookout for new, helpful sites and apps that will assist me with my travels in the long run.

Helpful Sites and Apps

1. Roomer

Have you ever booked a hotel reservation that was non refundable and for last minute reasons, had to cancel your reservation? Well instead of losing money, you now have the option to sell your reservation to other travelers interested in the hotel. Roomer will check if the hotel allows transfers and once it is confirmed, you are able to sell your reservation at a discounted price. You may not be getting your money in full, but you will at least get some money back.

2. Tingo

This site allows you to get a price drop refund. This means that if you booked a hotel and notice that it has dropped its price, Tingo will rebook you at the lowest price and will refund the difference to your credit card.

3. Easynest

If you are not a big fan of hostels or paying full price for a hotel room, there is an in-between solution to this. Easynest allows you to share your hotel room with another person, while paying only half for the room. So if you are a solo traveler, this may be an ideal solution for you.

4. Handprint

We all know that cell phone services are expensive, but it is even worse when you are abroad. As mentioned on my post, How to Avoid Roaming Charges, there are a few ways you can go outside of the U.S without the hassle of roaming. Handprint offers something similar, but to those traveling from another country to the U.S. Forget about roaming and spending millions on your phone bill, now you get the chance to rent a U.S smart phone without being charged a large amount of money.

5. Proper Swap

Changing money to foreign currency can be a bit of a pain, especially with all the fees that come along with it. Banks will charge an international fee and foreign currency booths are just a huge rip off leaving you with nothing, but enough for transportation. Proper Swap allows you to exchange money with other people who are looking to trade. This is ideal if you want to avoid the fees and extra charges. Best of all, you will have extra spending money by exchanging on Proper Swap,

6. Trveler

Have no idea where to go for the weekend? Trveler can help you with that. A subscription based spontaneous travel package service, Trveler will provide you with options to two different cities. All you have to do is pack up and go. You will need to pay for your subscription, but once you do, you will get round trip airfare and hotel stay for the weekend. How awesome is that? Now you can be adventurous without having to worry about the stay or the tickets.

So before you book your ticket or lose money with your non refundable reservation, make sure to check out these sites. Not only will you be a savvy traveler, but you will also save money by doing so.

Great tips! I’m really excited about trying Easynest. I’ve been planning a trip to Chicago in August, and it could be a real money saver for me. Why pay for double occupancy when you’re travelling solo?
