How to Make Cheap Hotel Food Taste Better

February 22, 2017 Hanny 3 min read No Comments

A few weekends ago, I went to St. Augustine to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We couldn’t settle on a hotel, so we decided to go for a cheap one. Well, when we got there, you could definitely tell it was cheap…the beds were hard, the walls were thin and the breakfast was plain awful. They had some eggs they called omelette (it was far from being one… It was just flat like a pancake), some bacon that was a bit greasy to be eaten by itself, some cereal, apples, bread and bagels.

Looking around, I didn’t see anything I wanted to eat until I came up with the idea of making a bagel sandwich. I carefully toasted my bagel, added the flat egg, the bacon and cheese. My husband decided to do the same and as we both took a bite of our bagel sandwich, we knew it was the best idea ever. Combined, all the ingredients tasted perfect together. The bacon didn’t taste greasy, the bagel didn’t taste too dry, the egg had flavor and the cheese was pure bliss in the bagel. Now some of you may not be fans of sandwich bagels and that’s okay, but know this, you do not have to eat cheap hotel food or spend money going somewhere else for breakfast. You can now make your cheap hotel food taste so much better.

1) The yogurt parfait

If you want to stay on the healthy side, try the parfait. The yogurt parfait is a mix of yogurt, granola and fruit. It’s a light and healthy breakfast. However, not all hotels have granola, so in order to make this work, you need the right ingredients.

  • Yogurt (vanilla would work best)
  • Cereal
  • Fruit

Get some yogurt, crumble some plain cornflakes cereal on top and add some bananas or bits of apples (if they have any of these fruits). If the hotel doesn’t have fruit,  then use honey on top (still tastes great!)

2) Baked Apples

This isn’t much of a breakfast item, but thought why not? I mean some of us do eat pizza in the morning. For this one, you only need two ingredients.

  • Apples
  • Sugar

Some hotels have microwaves so use this to melt the sugar on top of the apple. Set it for about a minute. Take out the apples and you should have apples that look baked with sugar on top.

3) The egg sandwich

Hotels that I’ve been to always seem to have a lot of bagels and bread. Use this to your advantage and make yourself a breakfast sandwich.

  • Egg
  • Bacon/sausage
  • Cheese
  • Toast/bagel

Make any type of breakfast sandwich with these ingredients, they will taste good no matter what ingredients you use.

4) The waffle supreme

Some hotels have waffle makers, even the cheapest of the cheap. Most people only ever think of putting syrup on top of the waffle, but there is so much you can do with it. Make yourself a waffle and add all the toppings you want.

  • Waffle
  • Fruit
  • Whipped cream

You may not have whipped cream, but you may have the fruit to put on top. If not settle for a waffle sandwich!

There are many ways to improve your free breakfast, especially if you do not want to spend much on food. If you have the money to stay at a nicer hotel with better breakfast then that’s great, but if not these are some of the ways you can improve your cheap meal. I may nit have enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but I definitely did enjoy my improved breakfast.
