If you are a big Instagram user, then you might have heard about presets and Lightroom. This is probably how you stumbled upon this post, right? You’ve heard about it, but have no idea how to create or add a preset to Lightroom.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Before I knew anything about presets, I kept seeing some of my favorite bloggers (yep, I have some faves!) selling their presets. I wasn’t sure at first the purpose of a preset until I started to see a real difference with my photos.
How to Create a Lightroom Preset – Mobile
If you’re using your phone to create a preset, all you have to do is get Lightroom on your phone and start creating (I do have a fully paid account), so some features may not be available to you. Do you want your photo to be lighter or darker? More red or more green? Play around with the colors and lighting until you get what you want.
Once you do that, make sure to click the three dots on the top right of the app and click on – create preset.
Creating a preset on a desktop isn’t hard either, the only difference is that there’s no three dots on top. Instead you will need to go to the develop preset panel and there you will click on create new preset.
How to Add Presets to Lightroom (For Windows)
If you’ve decided to purchase Presets for your photos, then you will need to add them to Lightroom. Most creatives/companies you purchase these Presets from will give you instructions on how to add them, but in case they didn’t, here are the steps. Now keep in mind that different versions, will have different ways of adding presets, but as long as you find ‘import presets’ then you are on the right track. Now for the basic steps on how to add presets to Lightroom.
- Unzip the file – Most likely your file is compressed/zipped. This helps transfer the file to other computers quicker than uncompressed files.
- Open Lightroom
- In the top menu go to “Edit >Preferences”
- Click the “presets” tab at the top of the box and then click “Show Lightroom Presets Folder”
- Double click on Lightroom and then double click on “Develop Presets”
- Copy your presets into the “Develop Presets” folder and after restarting Lightroom, you should see your presets.
Once your presets are in Lightroom, you can start using them, but remember some photos do still need to be tweaked a bit depending on the lighting. If you really do not want to tweak any, I would suggest getting more than one preset for your photos.
If you want certain presets on mobile, you will first need to follow the steps above (make sure you have Lightroom CC, so you can sync to your mobile). Once your presets are on your desktop Lightroom, go to your phone and make sure your Lightroom app is synced so you can get the presets.
Presets are great to have to quickly edit the photos and its great to have more than one preset, since all photos are different. Presets are also great for Instagram! If you’re trying to make a theme on your profile, then this is a wonderful option.
If you would like to take a look at some of my presets, they are up for sale! Right now, I am using my Winter Wonderful collection on Instagram, so if you want to see what they look like, go check them out or you can go ahead and purchase them!
