A story I like to tell people about my trip to Brussels is the one of Manneken Pis. This famous statue in Brussels, Belgium is of a boy peeing.
Now why on earth do I like to tell the story of Manneken Pis, you may ask? Well, have you ever seen a statue of a boy peeing? A rather famous one might I add? No, I didn’t think so…unless you’ve been to Brussels.
I remember the first time I saw this famous statue. I had asked my mom, why the hell there was a statue of a peeing boy. Of course, our tour guide gave us the history behind the famous statue, but he also gave us a few legends of Manneken Pis. One of my favorite ones and the one that is most memorable in my head starts out with a fire. The legend talks about a boy, who was sleeping, when all of a sudden he woke up to a fire. The little boy ran towards the fire and put it out by peeing on it. This is how he was able to save the town of Brussels. There are plenty of legends that deal with fire and the little boy putting it out by peeing on it.
Don’t you just love the humor behind the legend?? When visiting Brussels, the souvenir stores are full of mini Manneken Pis to take home.
Brussels was an amazing experience, but also a very interesting one. Not only because of the Manneken Pis statue, but also because this was the first time I had seen so many bums with dogs. Each and every one of the bums had dogs, which I had never seen in the U.S. before. Nonetheless, this city is worth the trip.
Ever been somewhere with a funny legend? Tell me about it!
