When I first moved to Orlando, I thought the only place worth seeing was Disney World. After a few years living in Orlando, I realized that Orlando had much more to offer than just the amusement parks. From themed dinner shows to amusing museums, if you are looking for an outing away from the Disney parks, these are some of the places to see.
1. Fort Christmas Historical Park
Not only is this place located in Christmas, FL, but it is surrounded by Christmas trees, shops and ornaments all year long. Fort Christmas Historical Park is completely free to visit and you will learn about the pioneer days and the Seminole Indian Wars. Aside from all the history, they also host fun events complete with festivals and crafts. This place is not only Mickey Mouse free, but it teaches history outside of the classroom.
2. Bok Tower
Located about an hour away from Orlando in Lake Wales, FL, the Bok Tower also known as the Singing Tower is a must see. The Singing Tower houses one of the world’s finest carillons and also contains the Anton Brees Carillon Library, which is said to be the largest carillon library in the world. This tower is the centerpiece of Bok Tower Gardens and only a few have been able to go inside the tower.
This tower not only fills the gardens with beautiful music created by the 60 carillon bells, but it is absolutely gorgeous!
3. I-Drive

International Drive is known for the entertainment, shops and restaurants. Thousands of tourists visit the area every year to experience the Titanic, shop at the outlets, take a ride on the trolley or go to a themed dinner show. If that still doesn’t call your attention, there are plenty of restaurants and bars to go to. One favorite bar is Howl at the Moon, which is a piano dueling bar full of music, food, drinks and fun!
4. Old Town
Located in Kissimmee, Old Town is an amusement park with rides, restaurants and shops. Not only do you not have to pay to get in, but on select dates they have street parties, car shows and much more. The rides do require the purchasing of tickets, which can also be purchased online.
Orlando has many wonderful places to go to other than Disney. Some will take you an hour away from the city and others are within the city, but if you are looking for something other than Mickey Mouse, then you will absolutely love these places. There are a few more that should be added to the list, but that will be for a later post. So stay tuned!
